I Eat Cupcakes: Cakes by Ron

What's my favorite day of the week?

Wednesday. Why? Because cupcakes at Cakes by Ron are $2 each! And they are my favorite cupcakes in Sarasota!

9/10 times they are perfectly moist (sorry if you hate that word) and the icing to cake ratio is impeccable! Most store-bought cupcakes pile the frosting high, but that's just way to much for my taste. Ron's cupcakes are usually about 1/4 frosting, 3/4 cake. And it's not all the same boring buttercream frosting either! Sometimes it's marshmallow covered in chocolate ganache (like with the S'mores cupcake) or sometimes it's a cream cheese frosting or a bavarian custard topping covered in ganache (like the Boston Cream Pie cupcake).

TIP: This ratio is ideal for turning your cupcake into a sandwich by breaking off the bottom half of the cake and placing it on top of your frosting. I like this method when I don't feel like getting icing all over my face.

There are simpler flavored cupcakes for those who like the classics, like Red Velvet or Birthday Cake, but if you're looking to be surprised and delighted by a cupcake with a twist, they've got those too!

Becca's Faves (in no particular order of favoritism):
1. Boston Cream Pie: Lord only knows why it's called Boston Cream Pie. We all know it's not pie. However, everything you love about this classic American dessert has been condensed and intensified in this perfect little cupcake. Moist yellow cake, cold, creamy bavarian cream, and a thin, rich layer of chocolate ganache. What's not to love?

2. Chocolate Dipped Strawberry: If you like strawberry cake, or really strawberry anything, you'll LOVE Ron's Chocolate Dipped Strawberry cupcake. Just the strawberry cake (with real strawberry pieces baked into the batter) alone is amazing. But top that with a little dome of whipped strawberry mousse blanketed in chocolate ganache and fill it with strawberry compote, and it's love at first bite.

3. Peanut Butter Cream Pie: If you're a fan of the Amish Peanut Butter Cream Pie, you will die for these cupcakes. It's a peanut butter cupcake with a creamy peanut butter filling, cream cheese icing, and peanut butter sprinkles on top! Is it heresy to say that I like it even better than Yoder's Pie? Fine. Then I'm a heretic!

4. Salted Caramel Cupcake: It looks very simple, but the art of the Salted Caramel cupcake is quite tricky. The caramel frosting can be too salty or too sweet or the cake might be too sweet. The best kind of cupcake is one where the cake is just sweet enough and carries delicate notes of the flavor, (in this case, it's a delicious Pecan Cake) but it let's the icing be the one to deliver the big flavor impact. Ron successfully delivers this beautiful balance of sweet and slightly salty goodness.

There's a ton more exciting flavors to try and they are always coming up with new ones. I can't wait to try them all!
