I Drink Tea: Elixir Tea House
If you haven't been to the Elixir Tea House on Hillview next to the Sarasota Memorial Hospital, GO RIGHT NOW!
Elixir is one of my Sarasota Happy Places and the best place to study or get work done. I am not joking when I say that Elixir LITERALLY got me through grad school. I'm one who needs accountability in order to focus for extended periods of time. If left completely alone, I will find all sorts of little distractions to divert my time and attention. Here, I have the accountability of other people around me, but because I am in my own private room, I am not as distracted by others as I tend to be in places like Starbucks, Perq, or Buttermilk.
The staff is lovely, and rather than open seating, the tea house consists mainly of 8 private rooms/lounges with chairs/sofas/cushions all varying by room. There is a smaller two person room, a conference style room that can hold about fifteen, and the other rooms which can accommodate eight quite comfortably. It's first come first serve, so you get to pick whichever you want from what is available.
*Tip: (1) Only some have doors that can be closed. The rest have sliding screens, which give you visual privacy, but loud conversations can be easily overheard. If you want a particular room, it's best to call ahead and reserve it. (2) The rooms are dimly lit, but most have light switches you can turn on if you need brighter light to get work done. (3) If the music is too loud in your room you can ask them to turn it down for you or (as I usually do) just turn it down yourself.
They offer a wide range of loose leaf teas, espresso, and wine. My go to's are the Iced Ginger Peach Green Tea or the hot Winter Berry Tea, but many of my friends are devoted to the Iced Mango & Friends Tea. They also offer a nice selection of pastries (most from C'est La Vie) and even food.
Most popular on the food menu is their Elixir Fries. This $3 snack is a delectable air fried dream. That's right! AIR FRIED! Meaning there is no oil used in cooking this crunchy basket of perfection. And now they offer them in Sweet Potato!
Another personal fave is the Marlenka cake, which is a traditional layered honey cake that comes in both chocolate and lemon flavors. Both are rich and dense, and quite wonderful.

*Parking Tip: Parking on Hillview is 2 Hour Parking, so if you plan on being there more than two hours before 6pm, park on Hyde Park Street directly left of Hillview.
